Common Tribes Terminology

  • Heavies: Refers to the juggernaut armor
  • HO: Heavy Offense, used to bring alot of firepower to the enemy
  • HOF: Heavy on Flag, often using a shield pack, the person in the heavy armor uses his body as a defense against cappers
  • Capper: The person (most often in light, or scout, armor) who is responsible for making grabs of the flag and trying to bring it back to score
  • LD: Light Defense, often a defense against HOs. They often carry shocklances and double as chasers.
  • Chasers: Sometimes doubling as LDs, these players are most often in light armor and chase the flag carrier when there has been a grab by the other team, trying to kill him and return the flag.
  • Raping the Base: Destroying such key elements as turrets, inventory stations, generators and generally being a pain in the butt to the other team. Rapers can be in almost any armor, from lights with cloak packs, to heavies with shields or sensor jammers.
  • Farmer/a farm: The farmer (also called a deployer) is responsible for deploying such elements are portable inventories, spike/clam turrets, cameras, sensors and other deployable items.
  • Spam: Often by a HO with fusion mortars. The HO (or other) will drop a bombardment on a specified area for the purpose of just distraction, or to clear people off of the flag/entrance to a base etc.
  • Frag: The term frag was coined by Quake and it means 'to kill'.
  • Patch: If bugs are found in games that have already been released, patches are often circulated to fix them.
  • Mod: Many games allow the players to create their own levels, characters and goals. These are often then released on the internet and are called Mods.
  • HUD: Heads-up display. Easy-reference display that shows the most essential information (health, current weapon, radar, etc) on the screen without blocking your view.
  • Noob: Newbie, new person, inexperienced person (often derogatory).

Map Packs

These Map packs are required to play on Grinning Granpas, other MA servers use server side maps. Not every map will be available or in the server rotation. However, since we like to have specail events the maps have been loaded and only require an MA Network Admin to activate the map if it does not appear on the in game map list.

  • Install Instructions

If the file ends in a ".vl2" then you only need to place the file in your Dynamix\Tribes2\GameData\base folder. If it does not end with ".vl2" the file will need to be extracted using winzip or other program into the correct folders.

  • PizzaClient
    • Admin script for servers running Evolution Mod. This script allows an Admin to quickly change passwords or setup 3 map competitions and even auto asign team names for each side.
  • KickReasonClient
    • Admin script which allows and admin to give a reason to a player for a warning or server kick. The warning not only appears in the chat log but also "depending on selection" the players Upper or Bottom warning box.

Installation Tips

You can download tribes 2 with the latest patches installed from both of these sites:

The file size is about 540mb, so be prepared for a long download. Note that this does not include an activation key, so you will need a prior one, or at least a user name and password. To play in pickup matches you will also need to download the map packs above and Defense turret.

Note that when you try and run the game using the links that tribes installs on your desktop, it will bring you to an update screen where you will receive an error, if you use the defense turret link, you won't have any problems.

Other Errors

  • U.E.'s, or unexpected errors should be expected, and will happen, alot of times they are random and annoying, so just restart the game. Having it happen ALL the time is irregular however and can be caused by any number of things.
  • ATI raedon anti-aliasing error- this can be fixed by using this
